C’est en 1884 que le premier bâtiment de l’hôtel Nonantum a ouvert ses portes à Kennebunkport, Maine.

Ayant été bâti sur un emplacement qui aurait servi aux Algonquins pour marchander avec des colons, on lui a donné un nom dans cette langue. Nonantum vient donc de la langue algonquienne et veut dire bénédiction.

It is in 1884 that the first building of the Nonantum opened in Kennebunkport, Maine.

Having been built on a site that would have served the Algonquins to make commerce with the settlers, it was given a name in that language. Nonantum thus comes from the Native American Algonquian and means blessing.

 

 

 

Les pavillons d’époque ont gardé un très beau cachet – particulièrement (à mon goût) l’aile arrière, ajoutée en 1930. Avec ses vieux lustres de cristal, ses palmiers, ses vieux portraits accrochés aux murs et ses beaux plancher de bois, l’endroit à définitivement une vibe vintage à souhait!

En plus, la musique d’ambiance d’époque est parfaitement adaptée et nous a charmées!

The older pavilions kept a very nice cachet – particularly (to my taste) the rear wing, added in 1930. With its vintage crystal chandeliers, palm trees, old portraits on the walls and beautiful wood floor, it’s definitely a place with a vintage vibe.

In addition, the ambiance music in the background fits perfectly with the 1920s; we were charmed.

 

 

Pour notre séjour média, on nous a offert une chambre située dans le Portside Lodge, un pavillon ajouté en 1987. La chambre en soi est jolie, coquette et confortable. Le pavillon, quant à lui, manque d’attraits et ne fait pas vraiment honneur au look général de l’endroit. Par contre, les chambres qui y sont situées offrent une vue tout à fait splendide sur la petite marina.

For our media stay, we were offered a room in the Portside Lodge, a pavilion added in 1987. The room itself is pretty and comfortable. The pavilion, I must say, lacks the charm of the older wings and does not really honour the general good look of the place. However, the rooms that are located there offer quite a stunning view on the small marina.

 

 

On retrouve les plus belles chambres dans The Carriage House Inn, une partie originale de l’hôtel qui date donc de 1884. Les chambres ont été rénovées, bien sûr, et modernisées, mais elles sont particulièrement jolies.

The most beautiful rooms (to my taste) are located in the Carriage House Inn, an original part of the hotel. The rooms have been refurbished and modernized, of course, and they are especially pretty.

 

 

Nous avons mangé au restaurant de l’hôtel, le 95 Ocean. Un pianiste y jouait des morceaux de musique bien choisi pour une ambiance feutrée et romantique.

We ate at the hotel’s restaurant, the 95 Ocean. A pianist was playing well chosen pieces of music for a cozy and romantic atmosphere.

 

 

Nous avons commencé avec une entrée de gnocchi aux herbes, servis avec du brocolini et une sauce soubise (béchamel et purée d’oignons) au homard. Ce plat était une vraie gourmandise, du comfort food total. La portion de homard était généreuse et la sauce, savoureuse.

We started with a first course of home made herbs potato gnocchi, served with lobster, chard broccolini and a Soubise sauce (which is a bechamel sauce with an onion puree). This dish was amazing and quite the comfort food. The lobster portion was generous and the sauce, tasty.

 

 

Ce soir-là, on proposait un plat en spécial, soit un repas de homard avec maïs sur l’épi, pomme de terre au four et moules à l’ail – le tout pour environ 20$ – une véritable aubaine!

Le tout débutait avec une chaudrée de palourdes aux portions de poisson et de fruits de mer généreuses.

That night, there was a special on the menu, a lobster dinner with corn on the cob, baked potato and garlic mussels – for about $ 20 – a real bargain!

It also came with a cup of clam chowder, with generous portions of lobster, fish and seafood.

 

 

Pour le dessert, nous avons partagé une gourmandise typique du Maine, un mochie, un genre de gâteau assez dense au milieu duquel on retrouve une crème de style costarde. Comme si ce n’était pas déjà assez gourmand, celui-ci était recouvert d’une onctueuse ganache au chocolat. Décadent.

For dessert, we shared a typical sweet treat of Maine, a mochie; a dense cake filed with a tasty custard cream. As if that was not delicious enough, this one was covered with a creamy chocolate ganache. Decadent.

 

 

L’établissement est doté d’une piscine, mais il faisait déjà trop froid pour que l’on puisse se baigner. D’ailleurs, vous ne manquerez pas de choix au niveau des activités offertes, attendez-vous toutefois payer des extras.

The resort has a pool, but it was already too cold for us to use it. There is a lot of choice in terms of available activities, however, expect to pay extras for some of them.

 

 

Le Nonantum est situé à distance de marche du centre du village de Kennebunkport, qui vaut définitivement une promenade.

The Nonantum is located within walking distance of the Kennebunkport village center, and it is definitely worth a walk to visit it.
